It seems as if the Second Amendment is the early favorite for “most misconstrued, twisted, contorted” topic of 2013.
How many folks have recently read the actual text? Until today, I hadn’t really read the thing since 5th grade civics. Here it is –
A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
That’s it. One sentence. Like the rest of our U.S. Constitution, it was written to be a bit open to interpretation. And boy o’ boy are we hearing some crazy interpretations today!?
There is no question our country suffers more deaths by gun violence than any other. No citizenry owns more guns. My questions surround not so much the control of guns but why Americans are so violent.
I believe in the wisdom of the document and fear those who’d easily change it. I also fear those who do not see an issue with violence. What I would love is a rational discussion on the issue of violence, not guns. Many cultures allow gun ownership. Few suffer such violence as ours. Why is that? I’d love your thoughts.
